Viva Bike Vegas – the Triple Crown

My vicious, super duper mean spin cycling RPM instructor from Gold’s Gym posted on my facebook wall today that he removed all the coveted finisher award shirts from the gym members today… except mine.

Joey Williams took a picture of my shirt in his cycling studio and posted it on my wall... this... this meant sooo much to me. Thank you Joey! Thank you Gold's Gym!!!

That shirt… wow. That shirt is so treasured. It symbolizes EVERYTHING I had done. All the blood, sweat and tears to keep my promise to Momma & Sissy. The 40-plus some non-athletic anti-gym rat with absolutely NO experience took on THE toughest 100-mile bike in America and I was able to do so with Joey pushing me harder and harder every dang morning at that class… making me stay longer, turning my gears two to three times more than anyone elses so that he could make sure my legs were ready for those mountains. The triple crown is significant because it symbolizes to me and to everyone around me in this journey that nothing is impossible so long as you have passion and support. I was way out of my league in EVERY single event I attempted but I didn’t give up. I trained right for all that I did and was surrounded by countless experiences supporters that believed in what I was doing. Together, we did it. That shirt is not mine. That crown is not mine. Those awards, donations, treatments, lives saved are not mine… they belong to all of us. Re-reading the blog post for Viva Bike Vegas and watching the video of the three sisters on the Silverman trail… I still can’t believe that I did that. Wow!

Just the first few minutes of this video, you hear from the greats themselves how difficult this is!!!

You have to be brave with your life
So that others can be brave with theirs

The moment was here. I boarded the plane knowing that quitting was NOT an option.

“Fasten your seatbelts. The captain just said he was going to try something new.” – Southwest Airlines Flight Attendant and part-time comedian. He kept my nerves at bay with his comedy act over the loud speaker.

After a few delayed hours of flight, I went straight to Las Vegas Cyclery to pick up my “Mimi”. To the person who has never ridden an awesome road bike before, the relationship between me and my custom built Felt bike is probably perceived as a bit coo-coo. And to those people I have to say “so what?”. “Mimi” was beautifully reassembled and rolled out to me with unanimous comments from the bike store staff gasping “Your bike is wicked!” – yes, I…

Swim test

The test wasn’t in the water… It was in my head. Once again, too much stuff going on in my head. Worrying about things out of my control and things I know I shouldn’t worry about… But I do.

Our regular pool was closed and my sponsor GOLDS GYM was kind enough to let us use their pool for today. Sad to see a fellow triathlete (who was not part of TNT) give me the cold shoulder as a result of team taking up their lanes during their training time.

I actually got up out of my lane and offered it to them so they could swim, and I shared a lane with another teammate and then they LEFT. They left the lane, the pool, their workout…

That’s when it hit me… A text sent to me earlier, moments before my swim by an old friend about how he trains for life… And this was exactly what he meant.

No matter how well I try to better myself, no matter how nice I am and no matter what I offer to do for others… Some people are just mad. Always mad and it has nothing to do with me although they may take it out on me… It’s not me that they’re angry at. I need to train my mind and heart to not get hurt when they do that to me.

So anyway… My swim was ok. I still feel like I’m sinking especially when doing one arm drills. I know this is my weak point. I need to spend more time on this so I can do better.

But cycling is so much more FUN!!!!

This YouTube link is the video that my RPM class made this week!!! I love these guys!!! They make my training so much fun and my lifestyle change so much easier for me.

I wake up at 4:30 to get to this class in time to put in a great workout. When people first hear how early I wake up, they all have the same reaction that I’m becoming accustomed to.

Sorry guys, this is fun and I don’t care if you thinks its crazy!!!

I was told today that I was a “beast” in spin class because of all the resistance I put on myself when I cycle. I guess I feel like I have to do so much more to catch up to everyone else that I have no choice but to to challenge myself more and more everyday. The only way I can improve in time to compete this next year is to train with the local elites. And to train with them must mean that I need to quickly advance to their level – a level that took them years to acquire. But I don’t have that time.

My running is hurting now. My speed has declined and my legs feel heavy. A sharp pain hits right when I reach the half mile point along the inside of both ankles up to the inner calves. The pain either subsides or I become numb to it by mile 4. I’m off track and can’t seem to find my mojo again. I’m certain it must be an emotional issue as stress levels have sky rocketed at work and in my marriage. Oh stop! I talked about a taboo subject?? At least I’m honest and you have to admit… running is a very mental sport. Any little mental distraction will impact my time, my body,

Today’s run focused on hill elevation and not speed. Developing strength in my IT band so that it doesn’t snap again is important to me. I think I’m training well but still very impatient with myself.

And not being patient waiting for my bike.

*sigh*
